Ferrari 296 GTS: Blu Eye 2 with LED display and LaserTrack.
A brand new Ferrari 296 GTS that went straight from the dealer into our workshop: a Target Blu Eye 2 with LED display in the rearview mirror and LaserTrack with transponders front and rear, together on one display.
This Ferrari 296 GTS came brand new from the dealer and went straight into our workshop for full detection: a Target Blu Eye 2 with LED display in the rearview mirror, plus LaserTrack with transponders at the front and rear. Everything on one display, and nothing visible from the outside.
The request
The car had just been delivered and had almost no kilometers on it. The owner drives long trips through the Netherlands, Germany and France and wanted the detection installed before he really took it on the road. Two requirements were non-negotiable: nothing should be visible on the car, and no second unit or extra screen could be added to the dashboard. He also wanted coverage at the rear, since a laser reading comes from behind just as often.
What we did
We started with the Blu Eye 2 antenna. A Blu Eye is only as good as where its antenna sits, and on a spider with a folding hardtop, an extra antenna in a sharkfin isn't an option. On this car the antenna was therefore concealed at the rear, in the position where the signal came in cleanest.
The LED display went into the rearview mirror. We opened it up and built the screen in behind the glass, operated with two small buttons in the lower edge. You see nothing of it until something lights up.
Next, LaserTrack. We hid the main unit out of sight and wired it in with fuse protection. Two transponders sit in the front bumper openings, and at the rear a license plate holder with built-in transponders. What matters is a clear line of sight to the road, so for each position we checked how low and how straight the transponder could sit without it showing up in the car's appearance.
Finally, the integration. Using the add-on cable, LaserTrack connects to the Blu Eye 2's add-on port, so both systems show on the same display and you can pause LaserTrack with a tap on the laser icon. All the cabling runs hidden behind the trim. On a plug-in hybrid we pay extra attention to the cable routing and keep the antenna cable away from the high-voltage components, otherwise you hear that back in the detection.
The result
After installation we drove a test route to confirm the alerts were accurate and that no interference came through. Detection on the C2000 network came in clean and LaserTrack reported neatly on the same display. Nothing about the installation shows: the rearview mirror looks standard, no unit or cable was added to the dashboard, and the car looks exactly as it did when it left the dealer.
What a system like this doesn't do is set the speed limit for you. That stays your own responsibility, across the border too.
Time it took
The Blu Eye 2 and LaserTrack together took two days of workshop time. On a car fresh from the dealer we work more carefully: trim panels come off gently, cables run alongside, and everything goes back exactly as it was. The wiring for both systems largely follows the same route, so installing them together saves time compared to two separate visits. The owner drove a loaner car for those two days.
